Amnon David Ar – painting and drawing. Curator: Daniel Cahana-Levensohn @ The Artists' House
In his latest exhibition, Amnon David Ar unveils three new paintings. One portrays a narrative scene, something the artist has not previously done; the second is an unusual and intimate portrait of a friend in a wheelchair. The third depicts an unconventional crucifixion. These three works tell stories, while simultaneously harboring deep secrets. The present exhibition offers an additional peek into the private world of the artist and his interpretation of it – the miseries of humanity and the personal distress of the lone artist, but also the grace that dwells in each of us. At first glance, it seems the exhibition’s themes are classical: the nude, portraiture, Jesus on the cross. The technique is classical as well: oil painting that rigorously maintains a systematic structure and a sense of an illusory space, bathed in light and naturalistic color. Further examination reveals that Ar is trying to establish a dialogue with the great artists of the past from his own perspective, with eloquent depictions of the modern body in a contemporary language. He manages to invigorate traditional drawing tools with a fresh hand, in order to extract secrets buried in the hours spent in meditative sessions in the studio.
