Ravit Cohen Gat / A Flock of Owls – Sound Installation, Text: Drorit Gur Arie @ The Artists' House

40 knitted kites, 90x60 cm. Original music, musical adaptation and production – Alon Eder.
"I'm called an incident of life. I live in the night in which the moon was killed and became a sealed darkness, so coarse that even the sunlight couldn't lighten it up, searching in it for my real self, which is actually two identities, each one playing an opposite role, and I am lost between them" tells Lila (pseudonym), an Arab woman from the south of Israel. The hidden feelings, the forbidden longing for freedom, for feminine self expression, rise through the choked words and the restrained voice that reveal her fears and the depth of her loneliness. Lila writes secretly, bringing life to her dreams. Handicrafts, the labor-intensive work as a feminine practice is a representation of the traditional passive femininity like patching socks or preparing a dowry, but it is also a possibility for creative escapism, inhabited by suppressed urges and desires. The bluish-purple knitted rhomboids hanging like kites from the installation's ceiling, like a body dancing with the wind, carry a potential of taking-off to an open space and a different horizon, however, they are attached to the ceiling, remaining tied up by string and controlled by the person holding them. Lila's song is woven into the gap between the tender and enveloped and the unraveled, constricted and shadowing.
