Shlomo Serry / Bright Future – photography and video. Curator: Eyal Perry @ The Artists' House

For the past two and a half years, Shlomo Serry has photographed/documented the ongoing construction in the "Har Homa" neighborhood, or "Homat Shmuel" as it is officially named. The politics of building on the fringes of Jerusalem, the collapse of the construction company "Hephzibah", the changes among the construction companies involved, and the erection of dense multistoried edifices where scenic landscapes once were, are only part of the political, social, economic and environmental issues that make "Har Homa" a controversial place. A bright pink caravan that served as a sales office, planted in the exposed, virginal landscape, caught Serry's attention, and for more than two years (2007– 2009) he photographed the building sites in the neighborhood. During this period, new construction sites sprang up like mushrooms after the rain. In the wake of these sites, new and colorful sales offices were set up, decorated with advertisements, boasting names such as "The Pearl of Hephzibah", "Sunrise Landscapes", "The Dutch Village", "The Woods on the Mountain", "King David's Gates". The virginal landscapes were transformed into excavation sites dotted with the beginnings of massive construction: crowded slabs of concrete with huge cranes towering overhead, surrounded by bulldozers and digging machinery, and covered in the dust that was raised by trucks lumbering along dirt paths – some of which eventually became paved roads. The exhibition includes a video display and four photographic works. It documents the changes that occurred in the "Har Homa" neighborhood, and tries to convey the feelings aroused by the construction carried out there.
